Supervisory boards decide: green steel will be produced in the Saar region.

This marks another important milestone on the path to carbon-neutral steel production. Production of green steel is now slated to begin in Saarland in 2027.


First low-carbon steel from Saarstahl Ascoval arrives in Saarland

The first delivery of low-carbon steel from Saarstahl Ascoval, the new Saarstahl subsidiary in the north of France (Saint-Saulve), has arrived at the Burbach works. There they are rolled into wire and delivered to the first customers in the construction industry.

Cross-border hydrogen project in the Saar region clears first IPCEI hurdle

The project proposal jointly supported by six companies with the aim of establishing a green hydrogen economy in the Saarland, France and Luxembourg scores a first, important success.

Dr. Stefan Kaufmann, Innovation Commissioner for Green Hydrogen at the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), visited the Dillingen site today together with Ammar Alkassar, Saarland’s representative for innovation and strategy (Saarland State Chancellery), and Markus Uhl, a member of the Bundestag, to learn about the next important steps for the steel partners in Saarland on their way to carbon-neutral steel production.


“Green steel” initiative: cutting carbon with H2Syngas

With “H2Syngas”, Saarstahl and Dillinger have joined with Paul Wurth, a Luxembourg engineering company belonging to the SMS group to use their own process gases and significant quantities of hydrogen in the blast furnace process. The associated pilot plant, which is being built in cooperation with Paul Wurth, is scheduled to begin operating this summer.

The Saarland steel industry is firmly committed to the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement and wants to manufacture high-quality steel products in a sustainable manner. We present the strong rating of our sustainability strategy by CDP as well as our current innovation projects and feasibility studies for further C02 reduction.


Saarstahl’s sustainability efforts again earn gold in 2021

The strong and long-standing commitment of Saarstahl to corporate social responsibility (CSR) was again rated worthy of a gold medal in 2021 by EcoVadis, an international provider of sustainability ratings.


Cross-border hydrogen project in the Saar region seeking IPCEI funding

Six companies, five of them from the Saarland, have jointly applied for IPCEI funding. The aim of the individual projects is to develop a green hydrogen economy in the Saarland, France and Luxembourg.


More energy and lower emissions – new circular cooler dedusting system benefits the environment

The new dedusting system for the circular cooler with an integrated heat recovery system at sinter plant 3 of ROGESA Roheisengesellschaft Saar mbH, a joint subsidiary of Dillinger and Saarstahl, is significantly helping improve environmental protection at the Dillingen location. The environmental project represents an investment of EUR 28 million.


SHS Group achieves "Leadership" status in CDP sustainability ranking

In 2020, the SHS Group with the companies Dillinger and Saarstahl participated for the first time in the rating of the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) and achieved an A- overall rating.


Stahl-Holding-Saar to develop major hydrogen-based steel making plant in France

LIBERTY Steel, Paul Wurth and SHS - Stahl-Holding-Saar sign Memorandum of Understanding to develop a major hydrogen-based steel making plant in France. Pan-European partnership will assess the development of a 1 GW hydrogen plant and 2 million tonne DRI plant next to the ALVANCE Aluminium Dunkerque site. An important step in LIBERTY’s GREENSTEEL strategy and ambition to be carbon neutral by 2030.
